Our Journey So Far
UFA Martial Arts Academy, originally known as Nepean HapKiDo Academy and later Ultimate Fighting Arts, was founded in 1995 by Head Instructor Steve Perceval. His vision was to create a professionally run, full-time martial arts centre with a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere.
30 years later, Steve continues to teach, now training the children and even grandchildren of his original students.
About Steve Perceval
Steve began his HapKiDo journey in 1977 under Master Matthew Kim of the Australian HapKiDo Association. After returning to training later in life, Steve earned his Black Belt in 1993. He now holds:
- 5th Degree Black Belt in HapKiDo
- 3rd Degree Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under John B Will
- International MMA referee experience, including being the first Australian to referee in the UFC
- Founder of UFA Martial Arts Academy, the longest running martial arts centre in Penrith
Steve has refereed internationally in countries such as China, Singapore, Japan, the Philippines, and New Zealand, making him one of the most experienced MMA referees in the world. His passion remains teaching, guiding students to Black Belt, and developing a strong team of instructors at UFA.
UFA and the Alta Program
In 2023, Steve became Head Coach of Team Western Sydney for the Alta 20 Week Warrior Training Program. This program allows complete beginners to experience MMA training and, if they choose, compete in a supervised bout at the end of the season. UFA is now in its fourth season running the Alta program, which has changed the lives of many students by building confidence, fitness, and resilience.
Martial Arts Styles at UFA
HapKiDo
A traditional Korean martial art with practical self-defense applications. HapKiDo combines striking, throws, and locks similar to Karate, Taekwondo, Judo, Jiu Jitsu, and Wrestling—making it one of the most effective self-defense systems available.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)
Adapted from Japanese Jiu Jitsu, BJJ is a complete ground-fighting system developed by the Gracie family. It incorporates takedowns, sweeps, submissions, and escapes—allowing smaller practitioners to overcome larger, stronger opponents. A highly practical and formidable self-defense system.
Combat 4 Fitness
A fast-paced fitness program created by Steve Perceval, combining MMA-based strength and cardio drills with pad work. Suitable for all ages and fitness levels, participants can train at their own pace while improving conditioning and learning striking skills.
Alta MMA Program
The Alta 20 Week Warrior Training Program is designed for beginners wanting to explore MMA for fitness, confidence, or competition. At the end of the program, participants have the unique opportunity to step into a cage and test their skills against others who have completed the same training.
Train With Us
We offer adults and kids classes in HapKiDo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, as well as adult-only classes in Combat 4 Fitness, Amateur MMA and Alta MMA.
